Maliyah just had a CT scan on Friday and the doctors are still unable to find out what is wrong with her. She is fine when she is laying down but the minute you move her or set her up she is screaming in pain. The doctor that put the rod in her back is out of the country and will be back next week. We went and saw his partners, but they were unable to see anything wrong. She hasn't been able to attend school for several weeks now. Kendra, Justin, Austin, Courtney and I have all had the stomach bug that is going around. Courtney even had to miss her performance on Saturday because she was to sick. Jake is the only one that hasn't gotten sick. What a lucky man he is!!! The kids our so excited for Christmas and I am getting things ready for our New Year's Party. Its a lot of fun to have Jake's family and our friends over to play games and just have a good time. Than on New Year's Day the kids go and sled at the golf course up the hill from our house. I am slowly getting over the bad infection that I had. My energy level isn't the same yet, but life goes on. Jake is so great with helping me with the house. If I don't have time to update before Christmas, I want to wish you all a Very Merry Christmas. Love The Herrin's

I didn't realize that it had been such a long time that I hadn't updated. I have been REALLY sick!! The kids and Jake had a great holiday and I was sick in bed for most of it. We have had a lot of snow here and the kids have been out playing. Maliyah has been pretty sick for about 9 weeks now. We have taken her to doctor, after doctor and no one can tell us what is going on with her. She has missed a lot of school, but she is keeping up with her work. I am helping her during the day. All of the other kids are doing really well. I hope you all had a good Thanksgiving. I need to go and lay down. I will update more when I am feeling better.

Everything is going well. Maliyah is slowly making progress, but still really sore and we're not sure exactly why. We're exicited for Thanksgiving. The kids are out of school this week so it's really busy.

We have been so busy with 3 children being high maintance, but it wasn't their choice. Maliyah has been pretty sick since last Wednesday. We just got back from the ER with her. We spent about 7 hours there. Justin's HSP is getting a lot better. The steroids are helping with the stomach pains. Everyday we can see more of an improvement with his health and pain. Kendra has been on a PICC line and we just were able to pull that out on Wednesday. Austin and Courtney are so health!! I am so grateful for that again.

Justin is sick with HSP. It a auto-Immune disease that is making it so that he can't walk or really move his legs. He has what looks like a really bad rash on his legs and bum, but it where the platlets in his blood are attacking his viens in his legs. The doctors said that sometimes it can effect the kidney function, so I am taking him once a week to get his urine checked. I just feel so bad for him. The doctors weren't sure how long it will last, but they thought 4 weeks min. He is sad because he won't be able to go with Austin to preschool:( I just hope that this doesn't last very long. the rash is really bad all over his legs. Keep him in your prayers. Everyone else is doing really well. thanks for the support.

I never updated for Courtney's 9th Birthday!! Sorry Court!! Well we were so busy that day getting everything ready that I forgot. Courtney we are so proud of the young lady that you are becoming. You are such a blessing to everyone in our family. I am sure this Birthday is one you will never forget. You were so worried that Mom and Dad didn't get you anything, but I got your American Girl Doll Emily weeks ago. I also asked the Grandparents to chip in and get you outfits. Your face when you opened your doll was priceless. You are still taking her everywhere with you. WE love you Courtney!! You are always so worried about your sisters. Your brother and sisters are doing very well and finally got back to school after being out for 3 weeks from their VEPTR surgery. Life is really crazy!! Courtney, I am sorry that I have to be at the hospital so much with your sisters, but that will get better I promise. Keep up the great work!! Love Mom and Dad

I am so proud of my children!! Kendra is doing a really great job getting over her infection and has even started moving around. Maliyah is really nervous about how her new body feels, but she has started moving around more. Courtney has been so brave with mom being at the hospital a lot with the girls. Justin and Austin really love to be with Grandma Patsy. I am so glad that we have people that take good care of my kids when I am gone. I hope the girls can return back to class within the next little while, we will just play it by ear and see how they are feeling. Jake and I are trying to save for our 10 year Anniversary, we are so excited to just get away together, but I know that I will miss my kids. Thanks for all of the prayers. Love The Herrin's

We had a pretty hard day at the hospital with Kendra. When I got here this morning I changed her diaper and noticed puss on her diaper, her temp was 103.8 and getting higher. Nothing made the pain better. Infection disease came by and they were our life savers because they got things going for the doctors to help Kendra. They called them and got them to come up and look at her. That was at 4:00pm and by 5:00pm she was in the OR. She had an infection inside her skin, he drained the puss and washed it really good. He left the skin open and packet it with gauz. She is so happy right now, Jake and I are on cloud nine because she feels so good. Life is really good. On Thursday she is going back to the OR for them to clean it up again and make sure the infection is taken care of and he will close her skin. I am so proud of Kendra for being so strong and brave. Thanks Holly for helping Kendra today when we were figuring out the best thing for her. I LOVE PCMC!!! Thanks docs for your hard work.

I forgot to add that I am very proud of myself because I have been going to the gym 4-5 days a week(only 2-3 when the girls are in the hospital sometimes) but I have lost 10 pounds!!!! YEAH!!! I feel great! Thought I would add something postive because the last little while everything seems negative, sorry about that:)

I have bad news!! Kendra was admitted to the hospital yesterday.. I noticed some yellow stuff coming out of her side, than she started to run a fever, and than I couldn't move her without her crying really hard. So I took her up to the clinic and they told me to take her to her primary care doctor. When I got there he was very worried about her and told me to go right back up to the ER. I got the run around yesterday and the worst part was I didn't have any pain meds. She is getting better, but its a slow process because she was septic. Maliyah is doing so well. Her pain is more under control. I was even able to get some sleep last night, what a relief that was. It was a harder day yesterday than it needed to be because I hadn't slept in days. I am feeling on top of the world this morning. Thank Heavens!! Anyway I need to get back to Kendra. Please keep the prayers coming. The Herrin's

We have been up with the girls most of the night since they got home from the hospital. This is worse than I thought it was going to be, but I know that everyday will get better. Kendra is slowly getting better, but had a hard day and night last night. I have no idea why Maliyah is still in so much pain. On Thursday it will be 2 weeks, so I hope things turn a corner than. Everyone else is holding up and doing well. Thanks for all the concern. The Herrin's

10:50 PM

We have had a set back with Kendra. I was changing her clothes this morning and look at her stomach and she has a hole in it. We can't do the wound vac again, but I am looking into the chamber again to see if that is possible, last time our insurance wouldn't pay for it. We would have to drive 45 minutes away to find a chamber that will work for our insurance. I was up most of the night with Maliyah, but her pain seems to be better today. I am just so tired now. Life really is get. Jake's mom is my life saver, because she is letting the boys and Courtney sleepover so I can focus on getting the girls better. My neice Bria is staying with the girls to help them not focus so much on the pain. Thank you all for your prayers and support. Love The Herrin's

Both of the girls are home from the hospital!! I am so excited!! They are both in pain so I am rotating between drugs. This last surgery I looked through the girls history to find that Kendra has had 36 surgeries and Maliyah has has 38 surgeries. I was surprise to see the numbers so high. I can't even remember most of them, I probably prefer to forget about all of them. I am so proud of them!! They are doing there best to get better. Maliyah is on oxygen because she has some fluid next to her lungs. She has also had a lot of little set backs. Neither one of the girls are able to walk, but will only last a little while. When the doctor came and talk with us after each one of the surgeries I finally was able to ask how much of a curve each of them had, so Kendra was 90 degrees and Maliyah was 110, I was shocked!! Than after I saw Kendra her back was all the way straight and Maliyah was mostly straight. I have never seen such a dramtic change after a surgery. If you could each say 1 prayer that the pain will subside that would be so helpful. When Kendra was coming home from the hospital she was smirking all the way home because she was setting up so straight. I am so sorry this post is jumping around so much, I am so tired and I still have a long night ahead. Love The Herrin's

10:10 AM

Sunday was a very hard day for the girls because of pain. I got to the hospital at about 10:00am and from that point on they wouldn't stop crying. I tried everything I knew how. We had a night nurse that came on named Ryan, he was God sent because he made Maliyah so comfortable. Kendra on the other hand wasn't comfortable and the nurse was trying. This was such a hard surgery!!! I am so tired and wish I could sleep forever!! Thankfully Jake dropped the kids off with Grandma and came up to help me with the girls. They are in two different rooms and both of the girls wanted somebody in the room with them. Its great exercise!! Justin and Austin are having a great time with Grandma. Courtney missing Jake and I terribly.

Hi everyone!! I am sorry I didn't post on Thursday night about Maliyah. She came out of the surgery on the ventilor, so I needed to stay with her. Her surgery went very well. Her back is a lot straighter. I just called the hospital a little while ago and Maliyah has a fever of 38.8, so I am very worried about her. I knew that she was going to have a hard time because she always does. It really breaks my heart to think that, yet again she is struggling. Let me just give you the low down as to what will happen. Maliyah could have 3 problems, a bladder infection, a steph infection where they put the rods in or her kidney is having problems. Just say a prayer for Maliyah. Kendra on the other hand is doing really well, her pain is getting better all the time. Courtney came up to the hospital today to visit her sisters. I had told her how much the girls had grown after this surgery and her wanted to see for herself. Courtney loves the hospital!! Austin and Justin were so excited to see me tonight and frankly I had missed them a lot as well. Please, when you read this say a prayer for Maliyah, I am so worried about her. Thanks The Herrin's

Hi everyone. I wanted to update about the girls surgery today. Kendra is in right now getting her veptr in. Maliyah is being really brave and asleep on daddy. Everything so far is ok. They haven't updated us yet about Kendra's surgery so I will update more after they are done. We went to parent teacher conference yesterday. When I was waiting for Courtney's teacher I was reading some of things the kids were thankful for. I got to Courtney's and she said that she was thankful for her family and named all of her brothers and sisters, than at the end she said that she was grateful for all of her experiences that she has had in life!! I cried when I read that. I am so proud of Courtney and how she handles life and that she is always trying her hardest to be a great big sister. I love you Courtney.

Great news Maliyah lost her tooth of Friday. She wasn't nearly as excited as Kendra was about hers. Maliyah was scared to death about the Tooth Fairy coming. It was so sad! When I put her to bed that night she was very upset about it, and asked me to call the tooth fairy and tell her not to come. I told her that I would and she seemed to calm down and fell asleep. She was so glad when she woke up the next morning that there was no money under her pillow. I am very nervous for their surgery on Thursday. When I think about it my heart beats really fast. I am not sure how this surgery is going to go. It makes me so nervous, but I know that they need it for their lungs to grow healthy. There are so many amazing things that will happen after this surgery. I wish I could tell them how it is going to be after words. I told them that they will be in the ICU for a little while and Kendra said she was happy about that, because they have a lot of toys there. The girls are always looking for the positives in life and I love that about them. They take things in stride. Courtney has taken off with her dance. She always has something new to show me after dance. Justin loves watching Thomas the Train, when he runs around the house he is always make different train sounds. Austin acts so much older than his age and he is always right about everything, LOL. They are such sweet little boys. Love The Herrin's

We just got back from the show. It will air on the 28th on October. There was the neatest story about a little boy named Eliot. You need to watch the story on Youtube, its called 99 balloons. I was sobing when we were watching this on the Oprah Show. It will be on the show that we are on, close to the end. Now I am making plans for Courtney's Birthday Party. I am so excited for that. She wants an American Girl Doll named Emily. She is so cute!! She can't wait for her birthday, I on the other hand wished she didn't grow up so fast. Kendra and Maliyah will have surgery in 7 days and I am scared to death. Time seems to go very quick but when the girls are in the hospital the minutes go by so slow. Justin and Austin are going to their first field trip today. They are going to the fire station. Since I have been gone they wanted to stay hom, but I need a nap. It was a whirlwind trip to Chicago. I have to go take some tylenol and lay down. Talk to you all later. Love The Herrin's

When Kendra wokeup in the morning she was so excited to see what was under her pillow. She pulled out a dollar bill and wondered how the tooth fairy got it under there without her knowing:). She was so cute about it. Courtney is so upset about not going with us today to the Oprah Show. It hurts me that she is so sad about it. We were going to take her to the American Doll Store so she could pick out her doll, but it was closed. I don't want her to miss school. We have a new cover for the book that Jake will put on the web site, you can even pre-order the book. We are so excited for the book. We are excited to share our whole story with all of you. Wish us luck on the show tomorrow and on the plane ride. Love The Herrin's

Sorry everyone about the updates. Things are just crazy. First of all we have tried to put in pictures up but our camera is broken. I promise we will get them up soon. Out of the blue the Oprah Show called, they are doing a show about Miracle Children. Oprah was the one that asked to have the girls back on, she remembered them from the last show. They are very excited for the show. It will air on the 28th of October. We are still trying to figure out Maliyah's eating. She still has a tube in her nose and is gaining slowly. Kendra is having such a great time playing with friends. We take our whole family ever Friday swimming. Things are going really well right now. Courtney is excited for her Birthday coming up on the 29th of October. She will be 9. Justin and Austin are little handfuls. Justin LOVES to play outside with his friend Max and Austin loves to just play outside. Like I said things have been really boring and I have to say I am so greatful for that. Some of you have asked about the book. It will be out by January maybe even sooner. All of the proceeds will go to a trust for Kendra and Maliyah. We will be setting that up soon.

I wanted you all to read this:Two Choices What would you do? You make the choice. Don't look for a punch line, there isn't one. Read it anyway. My question is: 'Would you have made the same choice?' At a fundraising dinner for a school that serves learning-disabled children, the father of one of the students delivered a speech that would never be forgotten by all who attended. After extolling the school and its dedicated staff, he offered a question: 'When not interfered with by outside influences, everything nature does is done with perfection. Yet my son, Shay, cannot learn things as other children do. He cannot understand things as other children do. Where is the natural order of things in my son?' The audience was stilled by the query. The father continued. 'I believe that when a child like Shay, physically and mentally handicapped comes into the world, an opportunity to realize true human nature presents itself, and it comes in the way other people treat that child.' Then he told the following story: Shay and his father had walked past a park where some boys Shay knew were playing baseball. Shay asked, 'Do you think they'll let me play?' Shay's father knew that most of the boys would not want someone like Shay on their team, but the father also understood that if his son were allowed to play, it would give him a much-needed sense of belonging and some confidence to be accepted by others in spite of his handicaps. Shay's father approached one of the boys on the field and asked (not expecting much) if Shay could play. The boy looked around for guidance and said, 'We're losing by six runs and the game is in the eighth inning. I guess he can be on our team and we'll try to put him in to bat in the ninth inning.' Shay struggled over to the team's bench and, with a broad smile, put on a team shirt. His Father watched with a small tear in his eye and warmth in his heart. The boys saw the father's joy at his son being accepted. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Shay's team scored a few runs but was still behind by three. In the top of the ninth inning, Shay put on a glove and played in the right field. Even though no hits came his way, he was obviously ecstatic just to be in the game and on the field, grinning from ear to ear as his father waved to him from the stands. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Shay's team scored again. Now, with two outs and the bases loaded, the potential winning run was on base and Shay was scheduled to be next at bat. At this juncture, do they let Shay bat and give away their chance to win the game? Surprisingly, Shay was given the bat . Everyone knew that a hit was all but impossible because Shay didn't even know how to hold the bat properly, much less connect with the ball. However, as Shay stepped up to the plate, the pitcher, recognizing that the other team was putting winning aside for this moment in Shay's life, moved in a few steps to lob the ball in softly so Shay could at least make contact. The first pitch came and Shay swung clumsily and missed. The pitcher again took a few steps forward to toss the ball softly towards Shay. As the pitch came in, Shay swung at the ball and hit a slow ground ball right back to the pitcher. The game would now be over. The pitcher picked up the soft grounder and could have easily thrown the ball to the first baseman. Shay would have been out and that would have been the end of the game. Instead, the pitcher threw the ball right over the first baseman's head, out of reach of all team mates. Everyone from the stands and both teams started yelling, 'Shay, run to first! Run to first!' Never in his life had Shay ever run that far, but he made it to first base. He scampered down the baseline, wide-eyed and startled. Everyone yelled, 'Run to second, run to second!' Catching his breath, Shay awkwardly ran towards second, gleaming and struggling to make it to the base. By the time Shay rounded towards second base, the right fielder had the ball ... the smallest guy on their team who now had his first chance to be the hero for his team. He could have thrown the ball to the second-baseman for the tag, but he understood the pitcher's intentions so he, too, intentionally threw the ball high and far over the third-baseman's head. Shay ran toward third base deliriously as the runners ahead of him circled the bases toward home. All were screaming, 'Shay!, Shay!, Shay! ... All the way Shay!' Shay reached third base because the opposing shortstop ran to help him by turning him in the direction of third base, and shouted, 'Run to third! Shay, run to third!' As Shay rounded third, the boys from both teams, and the spectators, were on their feet screaming, 'Shay, run home! Run home!' Shay ran to home, stepped on the plate, and was cheered as the hero who hit the grand slam and won the game for his team. 'That day', said the father softly with tears now rolling down his face, 'the boys from both teams helped bring a piece of true love and humanity into this world.' Shay didn't make it to another summer. He died that winter, having never forgotten being the hero and making his father so happy, and coming home and seeing his Mother tearfully embrace her little hero of the day!

Things are going really well. Maliyah has a feeding tube in her nose. Kendra is doing well. We still haven't met with the doctors about Maliyah's button. We are meeting with them on the 23rd. Justin and Austin love Preschool. They go in the afternoon, so I get about 2 hours without anyone at home. To bad I have so much to do during this time. Courtney is doing very well in her school class, she has so many friends. We just got a memebership to a pool, so we take the kids ever Friday. Its great when we get home because they are so tired they just want to go to bed. Than Jake and I can have some peace and quiet and watch a movie. Things are really getting a lot better. Jake is attending all of the BYU football season this year. He loves the games, I love just being about to set still for 3 hours. I don't like football that much, but if Jake does I can handle that. GO BYU!!! Love, The Herrin's

Hi everyone!! Sorry that it has been awhile since we updated last. Everything is going well with the girls and boys. This last week Justin and Austin started preschool, yeah. I am so excited!! They are as well. When they wake up in the morning they like to get their backpacks on and wait at the door. Its really cute. They are always excited when they come home from school. Kendra is liking school a lot as well, reading is very easy for her. She is doing very well after this last sickness. Maliyah is liking school a lot as well. She is very tired when she gets home. She is having a hard time eating. If we push her to eat her stomach gets really big and she is in a lot of pain. We are meeting with a doctor on Monday about her getting the button(feed tube that goes from the outside of the belly into the stomach. We will feed her through this). I don't want it to come to this but I don't want her to lose so much weight all the time. She is finally off steroids and looks more like her sister. She doesn't have a round face anymore. Courtney just started back to dance on Wednesday. She has a great teacher. Courtney loves to take dance and has a great time. She is such a natural dancer. I love going to see her perform. I forgot to add the the girls didn't have their VEPTAR surgery, we rescheduled it for the 9th of October. Love The Herrin's

Both the girls are in the hospital. Maliyah has been here since Tuesday and Kendra since Monday. We think the girls are getting better and than the throwing up will happen again. The stomach bug is going around the house like crazy. Kendra probably has a UTI also. I hope that they will be home by Saturday or Sunday. When I was down at the cafe getting ice cream. When I went to pay for it a nice lady in front of me payed for it. I was in shock, It was so nice. It almost made me cry because there really are good people in the world. I feel alone at the hospital and its hard to have to fight with people about what the girls need. This go around has been more stressful. I was really upset when they missed their first day of school. Courtney had a great first day!!! She loves her teacher!!!

Hi everyone!! This has been a hard weekend. On Friday Kendra started throwing up. We thought it maybe her meds. She was getting worse and started throwing up blood. On Saturday Maliyah, Justin and Courtney all woke up sick as well. I ended up taking Kendra and Maliyah to the ER, we stayed in the ER for 8 hours. Both the girls had a room on the 3rd floor. Kendra was so sick and both the girls labs were off. They stayed on IV's for 24 hours and Jake went and picked up the girls from the hospital today. Thank heavens for IV's!! Jake and I went to his High School Reunion. Jake said that he felt weird because he couldn't remember peoples names. He has been graduated from high school for 10 years!!! Time has gone by fast. I will write more tomorrow to let you all know how the girls are doing. The Herrin's

We just got back from the cabin. It was a lot of fun. The kids had such a great time. Before we left to go we were telling the kids that there was 4 wheelers to ride and we were going to take them out on the boat. That didn't go over well and the girls were scared to even go to the cabin. When we got there on Thursday the kids stayed in the cabin and played. They were having a great time. They even found a bat that was living in the cabin. We caught it and let it go outside. The bat tried several times to get back in, but never was able too. Than on Friday we got the 4 wheelers out, Kendra wanted to ride on them right away because the kids were having such a great time on them. I put a helmet on Kendra's head and sat her in front of me. We went slow so that she wouldn't get scared. I went up a road and down another one and got lost. Kendra was just having a great time and tell me to go faster. We saw so many deer and chipmunks. We final found our way back to the cabin. Jake had to work on Friday so he met us there after work. Maliyah was some what willing to go with Dad, ok she didn't want to go at all but Jake was taking her anyway. It was funny to see her kick and scream because she didn't want to go and than when they were going up and down the roads she ended up having a great time, silly Maliyah. Justin and Austin loved the 4 wheelers too. I let Austin push the gas and he loved that. Justin was so little on them that we had to hold him. WE let Courtney drive them with one of us on the back. It was a much needed fun vacation right before the girls surgery and school starting. Thanks Uncle Jim for letting us use your cabin and 4 wheelers. On Saturday we took Annette and Jorge's boat out and let each of the kids ride on the banana boat, they pulled us really slow, but it was great to have each one of the kids having a great time. Courtney is starting dance again. She just finished dance camp. Kendra and Maliyah want to take dance like Courtney so I asked around and one of our doctors knew of a place at the U of U, so that is where there are going. The girls hope that they will have beautiful dancing outfits too. School for the girls starts on the 20th of August and their surgery is on the 22nd. The recovery is about 4 weeks. They will be in the ICU for 24 hours and than moved to the floor. We should be home again by the 27th. Jake nephew Luc will start his chemotherapy on the 29th. His tumor is growing very quick. He has had 3 surgeries to remove it and nothing seems to help. We are praying that this helps the tumor stop growing, but we will have to wait and see. I will keep everyone posted about Luc. Please keep Kendra, Maliyah and Luc in your prayers as we start another journey of surgery and recovery. Also Luc starts another round of Chemo. Life is hard, but will be worth it in the end. We are a stronger family because we have faced these times. The girls should get their "robot legs" by October at the very latest. WE will know more after the surgery. Thanks for all of the prayers. I am so sorry that I haven't updated for awhile. It has been pretty busy. Maliyah has had A LOT of infections over the last couple of weeks. We have been in and out of the doctors office. She was peeing blood for a while there. We are going to be doing a 24 hour urine catch and see if there is anything other than bateria causing these infections. Kendra is doing well. SHe fall down the stairs and I thought she broke her hip or something because it was VERY swollen. Thankfully it was nothing. LakeView hospital was donating hyber-bartics to us, but since her 20 treatment are done we are going to have to find someplace else to take Kendra. We are having a hard time keeping her wound vac on. Its pretty frustrating because without it the wound is going to take even longer to heal. It take awhile to get everything change(20+ minutes) and than to have it come off again within 24 hours is very hard to keep doing, sometimes it will come off within hours of putting it on. The insurance company will only allow so many supplies. Courtney is doing very well. She has so many friends. She told me the other day that she was scaried to knock on people doors, I really hope she gets over being scaried of things like that. Justin is such a little character because when we were outside today he had just a pullup on, he didn't want to go inside to go potty. So my little man pulled down the pullup in the front yard and peed on the grass. What can I say, but at least it wasn't in his pullup LOL. Austin is such a mommy boy. I am trying to talk to him about preschool everyday so that he isn't scaried to go. I try and tell him that mom is going to drop him off for school and come back and get him. He hates the thought of me not being right there with him. He is my little shadow! Kendra and Maliyah went to a birthday party today and had a great time. School for us is starting on the 20th of August, I do have to say that I am happy about that. I can only entertain for so long and than I am tired. My sister Heidi was tell me about something call GEO Cache, where you go out and find treasure with a GPS system. So when we went to my parents house for a BBQ we looked for treasure. The kids had such a great time. I haven't been feeling very good. I thought that I had a appendix that needed to be taking out, but found out that I had golf ball size cyst on my right ovary. I had them a lot when I was in school, but all of the scary stories made me run to the doctor a little faster than before. I also think something is wrong with my thyroid, so I am going to see the doctor on the 8th of August. Other than all that life is great. Here to having enough money for school supplies for the 5 kids. Love the Herrin's

I hope you are all having a great summer. Justin spilled orange juice on my keyboard, so its pretty hard to type. The kids had a good week. I took Courtney, Justin and Austin to Surf and Swim, they had a great time. Kendra and Maliyah had a playdate with one of their friends from school. They really like her because she "isn't bossy". We just got back from Carl's Jr., the kids love to play on their playplace. We had to leave before some of the other were ready because Justin peed his pants and Austin pooped his. I am going to be showing this journal to their future wives :). We also sat the tent up in the backyard and let the kids sleep in it for 2 nights. The boys were to scared so they would lay with the girls until they were tired and than Courtney would come and tell us. We tried the ice cream recipe that someone(I know who you are, so thank you) gave to me. The kids loved it!! Thanks again for the great summer ideas. Love The Herrin's

Thank you for all the fun activities for the summer holidays. We have done many and the kids have had a lot of fun. Kendra's wound keeps getting smaller and smaller. I pray everyday that it will be closed by the end of July. We just scheduled the girls back surgery for Aug 22nd. I am scared for it but have done research and seems like the very best thing for the girls. The VEPTAR is a rod that goes in the back and will straighting the back. Kendra is having a lot of side pain from the separation surgery, so I think this will help with that. After the VEPTAR are in, than we will be looking into the "robot" leg. I talked with Shriners Hospital this past week, they explained that after the doctor gives the go ahead after the VEPTAR surgery we should have our "robot leg" within 3 weeks. I am beyond excited and so are the girls. They will have to undergo 2 days a week physical therapy and everyday I will have to do what they teach me there, but this is what we have worked hard for. I wasn't sure for along time if the girls would be able to have any leg, but now we know that they can:). AS parents we worry so much about our children, but things always workout in the end. Since we have been writting this book I have remember things that I haven't thought about for years. I am so glad that we are doing this. I want to tell each one of you to keep a journal or write your life story it will have the most amazing lifing changing things happen. WE are now working with the publisher and will let you all know what happens there, keep your fingers cross. Love The Herrin's

I need some great ideas for the summer to keep the kids busy. Kendra can't go swimming because of the wound vac so I need ideas, cheap ideas. It is pretty hot in Salt Lake City about 103 degrees, so Maliyah can't be outside for long periods of time. What fun things do you or did you do with your children in the summer time, remember I don't have anyone to go with me so I need creative ideas, even if it something fun we can do at home. I have to tell you all about something that happened today. Jake and I were watching Fools Gold, and Austin heard the guns going off in the movie, he had his gun and started shooting at the TV. How cute is he!!!:) I took all the kids to Carl's Jr yesterday to the playground to play. We were there for 3 hours and they had so much fun. Kendra wound is slowly but surely getting better, but sometime I wonder if it will ever be closed. The dressing came off today so I let her be a kids on the slip and slide. I was walking in the house after make sure they had sunscreen on and heard Kendra tell Courtney, "this is the best day ever" my heart melted to think about everything that Kendra is going through and wish that I could take it away. Everyday that she is going to the chamber she is really make the other patient's day. She has such a light bubbly personality. There is a lady there named Joyce she is in her early to late 70s, but everytime she sees Kendra her eyes lite up. The employees said that before Kendra came Joyce would sleep through her whole treatment, but now all she wants to do is listen to everything that Kendra is saying and watch every move she makes. There is such an amazing reason for everything that happens in life. Everyday Kendra is making a difference in Joyce's life. Joyce lives at a Care Center that my Father in-law use to live at. When we started this journey of having conjoined twins I wondered what I was suppost to learn from all of it, but everyday I realize that my children aren't just there for me to learn from but for other to find strength for another day and another trail because they can see how wonderful my children have dealt with trails. I really don't think that we could of done this without all of you praying and give your support. I hope that you feel our love to you and thank you for sharing your thought in the guestbook. With love The Herrin's

Josh is home from the hospital. He is on oxygen. but has no desire to keep the canula on. He now has an enlarged heart and homecare is coming to take blood from Josh 3 times a week. Summer is really getting to me and I need a break. I hope that I can get someone to watch the kids so that we can go out. Kendra's wound is healing well. Courtney is playing a video game that I can't get her away from. Maliyah is getting use to doing more things for herself. Justin and Austin are still potty training, when I think the boys have gotten it down they pee their pants again. It will be a work in progess for awhile. Hugs from the Herrin's

I thought I would update you all on my little brother Josh. He is off the ventilator and has been for about 4 days. He is still in the ICU. They found a blood clot in his left arm and his lungs aren't getting any better. I don't know if I have ever posted that Josh has Downsyndrome(sp). About 8 days ago he went in to get his appendix(sp) out, after that surgery he was having a hard time breathing. He went into cardiac arrest and they shocked his heart to get him back. My mom was having a really hard time but everyday its getting better. I think that they understand more of what Jake and I have been through with K&M. It really does effect the whole family when someone you love is so sick like that. I hope they will come and visit us more at the hospital when we are there with the girls. Kendra's wound is slowly getting better. Jake is mastering the changing of the vac. Kendra tells Sandy(the wound care nurse at the chamber) that he is getting faster at it. I got sick of changing it several times a day so I let it up to him for a little while. Kendra is upset about the swimming lessons that we were going to have all the kids take this summer. I hope everyone is having a fun and safe summer. Love The Herrin's :)

It was Justin and Austin's birthday yesterday. We were going to have a water party, but it was to cold. Kendra's wound is healing slow. When she was in the chamber yesterday, her teeth were hurting, so she had to come out. When she got home I took her to the dentist to see why that happened. There was no apparent reason for this. I didn't make her go today because she was so scared that it would happen again. My little brother Josh is in ICU. Here is an email I recieved from my dad today: Hey, everyone, I know you all are anxious to hear about Josh. He's still on a ventilator and heavily sedated. He has pneumonia, but his cardiologist said there is no damage to his heart. His pulmonologist says there is, so who do you believe? Josh has been on 100% oxygen but is now down to only 40% so we're hopeful this is a positive trend which we'll continue to follow. The real challenge, after the pneumonia, will be weaning him from the ventilator. In order for this to happen, Josh will have to start breathing on his own, which he can't do while he's so heavily sedated. So, as they reduce the sedation, he will become more aware of his surroundings and circumstances and will most likely become more agitated, which will cause him to pull at his many tubes. Obviously that would be a bad thing. We don't yet have a solution so please pray for Josh. He's not out of the woods so we continue to need your faith and prayers. Love, Jeff, Janet, and Josh Sp please say a prayer for my brother. I will post the pictures that he sent with the email. Talk to you all later.

I thought I would update.. Our insurance was going to make us wait 30 days for the wound vac and Kendra's wound was spreading like wild fire. I was getting so scared. I called the wound clinic and they said to get Kendra admitted to the hospital. So I out her into the car and headed for the ER. They admitted us right away because the wound was worse since they last saw us 48 hours before. We are still waiting on insurance for the chamber, but since have gotten the wound vac at home. It works like a charm!! We are already seeing new tissue and skin growing:). Please keep the prayers coming for Kendra. I hope that Kendra will be able to swim this summer. Maliyah is in some pain with the darn cathered they she has to keep in from her surgery. She will have it out on June 11th, but I am going to call and see if we can get it out sooner. Courtney is having a great summer so far with her cousin Mariah. They have had a sleepover several times and its just June 3rd. They really love being around each other. Justin and Austin went to my friend Amy's house today. I really needed a break and needed to get some cleaning done. They had a great time playing with her kids, she even took them with her to get Oliva's hair cut. I forgot to add that when I was taking Kendra home from the hospital on Friday we got in a car accident. Thankfully Kendra or I weren't hurt, just very shaken up and the lady and her son weren't hurt either. SHe was very nice. She hit us from behind and offered right away to pay for any and all damage she caused to the car. I was driving Jake's REALLY old cars so I wasn't worried about it. I think she realized that I was Kendra and Maliyah's mom after a minute. So Laurie if you read this thanks for being so kind, they need more honest people like you in the world:). Love The Herrin's

This surgery was really hard on Kendra. She was left with a large wound again. We are having a hard time keeping up with everything. We are going to the wound clinic tomorrow in hopes that she can do the "Chamber" again. I am just sick that this happened to Kendra. She really didn't need this again. We were released from the hospital on Wednesday and back to the ER on Thursday because she was not doing well. Than back home again on Friday. PLease pray for Kendra because if she get an infection in her wound it would be life threating. I am so sick about this. I hope that we can get the wound vac again on top of the Chamber. Kendra is really excited to go and see her friends again at the wound clinic. Kendra and Maliyah are graduating from Kindergarten tomorrow. I am so excited for them. On to first grade. This year was a hard one but I hope that we have some of the hard stuff behind us. Justin and Austin are potty trained. We are so proud of them working really hard at it. I really hope they don't have any accidents, but I know that they will. Courtney's dance recital is Saturday, she is ready for a long summer with little dance.

Just wanted to update really quick because Erin hasn't had a chance. Maliyah is home as of Sunday and back in school. Kendra is coming home today. Everyone is doing great. They will do tests on Maliyah for MRSA when she goes in for clinic visits. If she still has it, it hasn't caused her any problems yet, other than maybe a bladder infection.

Sorry I didn't update after Maliyah's surgery on Tuesday. Maliyah did great!! The surgery was about 3 1/2 hours long, I thought it was going to be a lot longer. They were planning on taking her NONE functioning kidney out, but they couldn't get to it because of all the scar tissue that has grown around it. We found out on Tuesday that she has MRSA, which freaks me out because she has a lot of surgery. For those that don't know what MRSA is, I will try and explain it. It a steph infection that you can't treat with antibotics. Its pretty scary because Maliyah doesn't have a good immune system to fight things off. Kendra's surgery went longer than the doctors thought it would, 6 hours. I got home not to long ago and she was still out. She is on oxygen because her saturation level drops low. She had two large hernias and they were able to fix her bowels. The Plastic Surgeon was able to remove some of the scar on the front of her belly. I was so happy about that, not that it wasn't a cute scar, but I am sure Kendra wouldn't want it there when she got older. Courtney was in a play today for end of the year assembly at school. She was a flower and did a great job!! We just got our family pictures back and will post them soon. My doctors are so great!! Thanks guys for your hard work. I better get some sleep because I have to get back up to the hospital really early tomorrow.

Maliyah's surgery is tomorrow. I am scared to death. They are going to be taking out her none functioning kidney and moving things around. I hope this helps with her infections. Kendra's surgery is on Wednesday. I will know more on Tuesday about Kendra's surgery. PLease say a prayer for everyone in our family because it so hard to face. I hate that they girls hurt and there is nothing I can do. I just hope and pray that they won't be in to much pain. We are going to give Maliyah a blessing tonight and Kendra one tomorrow. I will update you all tomorrow during the surgeries because it will give me something to do.

Things haven't been very good. Maliyah got really sick on Sunday and I took her up to PCMC. She was screaming at the top of her lungs because she was in so much pain. I was worried that her kidney was rejecting again. We spent 9 hours there and figured out that it wasn't her kidney. She had a kidney infection but it wasn't rejecting. They didn't put her on the right meds and she slowly got sick again. I called her normal doctor and he said that he needed to change the drug to something else. Kendra got sick at school because Maliyah wasn't there. She ran a temperature but I think it was just Kendra was missing Maliyah. Courtney has been stuggling at school. I think its because she is ready for the summer. The last month of school is so hard on the kids. Austin and Justin are making more that more messes. I final found a preschool for them that is 3 days a week. We went and let them meet the teachers. The boys didn't want to leave the classroom. I just hope they are potty trained by September when school starts.

There are just things that I never thought that I would have to say to my children. Justin and Austin had just gotten out of the bath and I was getting their diapers. As I turned around Justin was peeing on Austin. I had to yell "Justin stop peeing on Austin". He listened and stopped. I never thought I would have to say that. After laughing about it, Jake said you never know what boys are going to do next LOL. The kids are doing great.

Courtney got an A+ on her report!!! We were so excited for her. It was really hard.. She had to make a 3D image of the honey bee, which we made out of clay, a poster, than an oral report and than we made up a story about a bee named Honey. It was really cute.. Courtney came home and said that her teacher picked her report to read to the class because she liked it so much. I really enjoyed helping her with the project. I like being creative. I got my yearly check-up after the transplant, it went really well. I am so glad that I was able to give her the gift of life again. Maliyah also meet with her doctor and the transplant looks really well. I am so ready for school to be over with but not for the hot hot summer to start, I just want the kids to be out of school. I am so worried about Justin and Austin because they are starting preschool next year and I haven't found one that I want the kids to be in yet. I haven't decided if I want to do a home based preschool meaning they will go to someones home that has a degree in education or a school based preschool where I know that they are getting a really good education. I think I am going to try the school based only because I know that the teachers full attention will be on the children. Kendra and Maliyah went to a really good school based preschool in Bountiful, I will ses if its full. Well anyways, maybe I am just over thinking it, who knows? Thanks for listening.

We have been so busy since we got back from Disneyland on the 12th. We had such a great time, Jake was thinking about getting another night at the hotel. We took the kids on all the ride they could go on but most of the time they were scared, go figure. All the twins favorite ride was monster Inc. and Courtney's was Roger Rabbit. It was a long drive from Utah but shorter than we really thought it was going to be. We left on the 6th at 3:00am, the kids never really went to bed, we put them there but they never fell asleep. It took us 9 1/2 hours to get there. I loved all the ride because we were with our kids. We went to Newport Beach and had a great time playing in the water. One of the days we took the kids to Unversal Studio(sp) and Austin LOVES Dora the explore. When he saw her he ran up to her and gave her the biggest hug. Than afterwords Jake was talking to him about hugging Dora, he said he got to hug Dora but he didn't kiss her. It was so cute. Courtney went on all of the BIG rides. We had to force her to go but after she was so happy she went. She loved all of the fast ones. Kendra and Maliyah are scared of everything. I think it will always be a work in progess. Justin was so tired during the trip. We couldn't figure it out because we didn't stay up late or out to late. Then on the last night I started feeling really sick like I was going to throw up, but felt better the next day. Well when we got home Maliyah, Justin and I were sick. Justin and Maliyah were throwing up and I just was sick to my stomach. We are lucky it heppened when we were at home. Its funny because Jake and I were so scared to take all the kids by ourselves to Disneyland, but it really wasn't hard. Kendra and Maliyah have alot of special needs and we did great. We are already planning our next trip before the girls have surgery. Courtney and I work into the late hours last night because she had a big science project due on the honey bee. We had a great time paint the model and writting the story. I can't wait to see her grade. The kids have so much make up work from our trip, it will take them a week to get it all done. It was so worth it!!!

I don't know if I will have time to update tomorrow, but it will be 1 year since our kidney transplant, YEAH.. Its so cool!! I was talking to Maliyah about it today before school. We are so excited that everything is going so well. Kendra throw up at school yesterday, so she is on a different antiobotic for her strep. I think I am coming down with it too. This is really no fun. Kendra is staying home from school today and taking a nap so she will feel better. I hope everyone's meds start working soon.

Holy Cow!! It is almost time for our Disney trip and ALL the kids have strep.. Justin was up last night throwing up. I have to call the doctor about it today. Please don't write me about grammer errors, I really don't care! My children will someday be so happy that I had this journal, that I don't care.. We had such a fun night. Courtney danced at the Jazz Game, she was so excited. The kids met the bear and some of the Jazz Dancers. When Jake gets a minute he will put up the pictures. I hope Courtney will choose to take dance next year, but right now she is burnt out on dancing. She would rather play with her friends than dance. The girls surgery is scheduled for May 13 for Maliyah and May 14 for Kendra. They will be in the hospital for 5-7 days if everything go to plan. I am starting to worry. We are having a lot of problems with our insurance company. They aren't willing to pay for some of the girls medical supplies that they can't live without. I am getting really sick of dealing with them. Its not like we planned to have children with special needs and we pay alot out of pocket for insurance and copays. We just really need them to start paying for what they should. Kendra is crying so I have to close. Thanks for reading.

Maliyah's kidney on ultrasound looks great, so its not rejecting, like they thought. That is such great news! She is still having problems with her bladder, but we are trying to figure that out. I am just so glad it isn't her kidney. Kendra is doing really well on her crutches and using them, verses her walker. SHe loves them!! The girls don't have school today, so that is great news. The weather here is bad, its snowing like crazy. Courtney had school today, but gets out early. The surgeries are probably going to be in May, hopefully one after the other. We are still trying to schedule those. A wonderful lady from our web site sent us a Dateline Special, about another set of twins that were conjoined about the same way as ours. It was so neat to see these girls walking without crutches and just "a helper leg". They are so cute. I talked to their mom when I was pregnant with my girls and she was so wonderful to talk with. I am really excited to get the rod for the girls backs and get them up on their "helper leg". The girls were so happy to see those girls with two legs and walking that they wanted to get their leg right than and there. I really wasn't sure if they could get another leg because they had nothing for it to attach too. I tell the girls all the time that one leg is good enough and they are perfect just the way they are. I HATE the word different, so we never use it in our house. Everyone is the same in our eyes even if they bodies aren't like someone else. I am in the process of trying to find a preschool for Justin and Austin. I really can't believe that its time for that. It just seems like a few monthes ago I was bring them home from the hospital. Time flies when you are having fun. We can't wait for California, because the weather here is snowy. We are started to get things together and movies and games for the kids to play on the way. They can't stop talking about it. Have a great day The Herrin's

I don't know if I have told all of you how funny my children really are. We were all cleaning the house last night and Kendra said, "Mom I hope I get married soon, so I can have a bestfriend like you and Daddy are". My heart melted because I knew right than and there, they were watchig Jake and I, the way we were treating each other and just everyday things. I was so glad that I was being the best example to them of a good healthy relationship. WE haven't gone to Disneyland yet, but are counting down the days. I am beyond excited. When we were looking into the strollers at the park we found out that they don't rent double strollers. I freaked out and started crying because I didn't know how we would get everyone around the park. Well I started asking around and I found someone that was willing to help us out. She has two double strollers and she live right by Disneyland, so she will let us use them. Thanks Nicole for all your help, you saved the vacation. Jake has been working so much lately, he put in a 34 hour day(that means he never came home). He is work none stop. When he is home he is working, its been really hard on him but he loves what he is doing. It haven't been that bad on me either because the kids can play outside, so it makes the house stay clean. We are having problems with Maliyah's kidney again. She is having ALOT of thick blood in her urine. Her blood work still looks stable but her index levels are raising in her kidney. It might mean that she is starting to reject again. We will just hold out hope that she is going to be ok and the kidney is going to do its job. Sometime people think that I call Maliyah's kidney my kidney, but I want you all to know that I see the kidney I gave Maliyah as her's. I think it hurts her feelings when people talk about her kidney as it still being mine. It isn't mine and will always be her's. Everyone had such a great spring break, it wasn't long enough. The girls had sleepover at our house. The girls had a friend named Aliyah sleepover. When her dad came to get her she cried because she didn't want to go home. Than their cousin's sleeped over. That had such a great time playing together. Yesterday I was at the hospital with Maliyah most of the day. She had her workup with the kidney docs and than an ultrasound. Life is so busy most of the time. I love just being a mom(I know that I am not just "a mom"). Things are going so well lately. I feel more in control of life. I hope you all are doing well.

Thanks for all the neat emails that you have sent to us. There are always bad people in the world, but more good. We are so excited about the trip to Disneyland. Everyday the kids are talking about it and asking how many more days. I can't tell you all how much we need time away from this madness, of everyday life. I can't wait to jump in the car and drive 11 hours with 5 little kids. I know some of you are thinking that we must be crazy, but it going to be crazy fun to, for the kids. When I was little we never went to Disneyland, we took fun vacations but never to Disneyland. When we went on Kendra's wish to Disney World that was my first time to Disneyland or world. We have never been on a family vacation, just camping. I really don't like to camp, but Jake likes to go every year. Courtney had her first competation this last Saturday. They won first place for their Hip Hop dance and 2nd place for there Lyrical dance. She did so well, but I have so bad news, I forgot my camera, so we can't put pictures up on the web site. Kendra and Maliyah are having their first friend sleepover on Thursday. They are beyond excited! Jake is working alot this week and the kids miss him terribly. Justin and Austin got their haircuts, they are so cute! I am very busy with the book but more with the kids. The weather has been good here for the last couple of days and the kids have been playing outside. They are such good kids and play so well together. How could I ever ask for any better.

I am so sick of the rude comments that we recieve via-emails. I have decided for everyone I get I will be putting their email up so everyone here can have it. I hope you will all email rude comments to them, We are really getting sick of it. There are so many wonderful and understanding people in the world. If you don't want alot of our friends to email you than don't email us rude things. We are a family and we have alot on our plate and I can't stand it anymore. So please email this wonderful person and tell him/her the comments aren't needed. thanks

Sorry its been so long sense an update. These last several weeks have been VERY VERY busy, ready to pull my hair out busy. Everyone is health again. WE had the case of the flu/colds/headaches and than some with bladder infections. We have seen to many doctors the last couple of weeks to say the lest. I think I started the big mess with a cold. We had some good doctors appointments to this week. Kendra and Maliyah visited with a orthopedic surgeon on Wednesday. We talked at great lengths about the veptars(rod that they place to straighten backs). It looks very promising. I got some emails from some of you about looking into braces. I did that and the brace will not work for the girls because they have many other health issues that will make it VERY difficult to have them hear a brace, but thank you for the information as I like to cover everything. We also had CTs and Xrays of each girls spine to help determine more of the degree of the curves. Than we meet with urology(sp)and went over some of what they can do to help the girls stay "dry" and it looks promising there too. So this will be the plan as of today. Kendra will be going into surgery for her bowel to be repaired, a double hernia and some deflex infections. Maliyah will be having her urinary tract operated on. Both of the girls will have back surgery this summer. We are also very excited to take the family on a vacation to Disneyland in April. The vacation is a much needed break for all of us:) Wish us luck on the vacation, we will need it.

Happy Birthday Kendra and Maliyah!! They are the VIP at school today. We are bring a poster for that and are bring donuts for their class. They are so excited.. I get to go and talk about them:)(but I have been to school everyday for the last 3+ weeks). When Maliyah woke up Jake told her that she looked alot bigger because she is 6. She thought that her dad was pretty funny. Kendra is still asleep. We have a lot of things planned for the day. After we get done at school we are heading to the movies and dinner. They want a playground for their birthdays. That is going to have to be for everyones birthday because it a BIG present. We also got them a few little things. Courtney got some presents to open on K&M birthday too. She didn't get much on her birthday last year because of her baptism. Hope everyone has a good day.

I took Maliyah to the dentist yesterday. What a difference a children's dentist makes. SHe was crying so hard when we got back to the chair, I thought she was going to pass out. I sat in the chair with her and they gave her toys to play with. AS soon as she saw the dentist walk in it started all over again. He sat down next to her and showed her all the different types of things he will use on her teeth. She cried more but his soft voice helped calm her, he told some very funny stories and made her laugh. Her teeth were very stained from all of her meds and from being on diaylsis but he got most of it off. I am so glad!! Everyday I worried about her teeth and her smile. It such great news!! Kendra is going to meet with the surgeon today because she is having alot of problems with her bowels. The surgeon is going to try and schedule Kendra for surgery the first week in March. I just hope they can do Maliyah at the same time and get both girls fixed so that they can wear underwear. That would be such a blessing. I am changing around 20+ diapers a day. I am sure that we could find away to spend that extra money we would save from 2 more being out of diapers:).

Another funny at the Herrin's. I had gotten a ghost email from a friend. Maliyah was setting next to me watching. So I open it up and the scary music starts. The rocking chair starts moving with no one around and than all the sudden a scary face appears. Well needless to say I scream and Maliyah was so scared so fall off the chair. Than Kendra had to come and see what happened, but I didn't show her. Good thing Maliyah didn't have nightmares last night. I had no idea what was going to happen. It was so funny! I wish I could of gotten it on tape.

We had a great Valentine's Day!! Its my favorite holiday. I love being creative with Jake's gift. We were tight on money, so I wrote him a letter that included 101 reasons I love him. Than I wrote each one of the kids a letter telling them how much we love them and gave them a small bucket of candy. I think they were more excited about cards from their friends than my notes to them. I just love doing fun things for them anyway. I hope you all had a great holiday. Love Us

The girls can't stop talking about their birthday that is coming up on February 26th. Everyday they ask "how many more days". They are so sweet. Courtney hasn't dance yet in the Jazz pre-game. She is working so hard to get ready for it. She dances sometimes 8 hours a week. She loves going with her two BFF. Justin and Austin are doing well. They love Dora!! All my kids have been very into Dora and it just gets really old listening to it. It very funny when I can sing all the songs on the show. Kendra and Maliyah's surgery is not scheduled yet. I will hopefully know more this week. Their doctors are out of the office alot. The back surgery will more than likely be this summer. I have heard that its a long recovery process. I hope they are wrong. Thanks are the prayers. The Herrin's

Holy Cow,what a week!!! Its been pretty overwhelming with daily life. We are looking into more surgery for the girls. WE HATE THE THOUGHT OF THAT, but Kendra really needs things fixed in her colon. All the kids are feeling better. Kendra and Maliyah are doing so well on their crutches. Maliyah can take 4 steps with 60% help and Kendra can take 6 steps with no help. Courtney is doing really well with her dance. Her dance team is performing at the Jazz game. Kendra and Maliyah are having another performance in March. I am wondering if Maliyah will be willing to sing with Kendra, time will tell. As I am setting here writing this Austin said to me. "mom change me", I asked Jake to please do it while I am finishing, Austin looked at me and said "daddy always changes me" LOL. Kids say the funniest things. My stress level is pretty high because of something that are happening at school with K&M. Please pray that those will resolve and things will be fixed for the best interest on K&M. It really hurts when you feel like something is happening and you are trying to fix it and no one wants to work with you. The girls have been through so much and always done well, but this is something that I think is probably more stressful than the kidney tranplant. Just say a prayer for us and I know with all of you praying, things will be easier for us to handle. We love you The Herrin Family

Thanks for the message about Hannah. Can you tell her that my Grandma has Leukemia also. Children are so strong and wonderful. We will be adding her to our pray list. Children are the things in this world that are the most amazing. We had a talk at church about how to honor our mothers and fathers one of the greatest commandments. But than we need to honor are children as well. I feel that my children were sent to me to learn from them and to become a better person. I wanted to update also about our family. We are working so hard on getting this book out to you all. There is really nothing new to report. Everyone is healthy and happy here. Have a great day.

Kendra and Maliyah were so excited yesterday after coming home from their singing group. They are going to be singing a duet together of a Hannah Montana song. They were singing late night and I was trying not to cry. What wonderful children we have. Courtney came home last night from dance and was excited because she can do the right side splits. Justin is doing so great too. He loves chasing Allie around the house. Austin had a pretty bad day yesterday. He had been sick starting in the morning and just layed around all day long. Than about 3:00 he ran into me crying and start gaging. I ran him to the bathroom and he started to throw up bright red blood. It scared me to death. I ran him right up to the doctor where they got us in. He hasn't thrown up sense put is just very white. So I am taking him back up today for some more tests with the doctors. Motherhood is so much harder than I very thought it would be. I worry all the time about my children and husband. Just wish us luck today that we find out what is wrong with Austin. He is acting ok today just not eating or drinking normally. Please say a little pray for him today. There is also a little 8 month old boy at PCMC named Charlie, please pray for him as he is fighting for his life. If Charlie's parents are reading this, miracle happen everyday so please stay strong and we will continue to pray for Charlie and his parents. We wish you the very best:) Much Love The Herrins

Everything has been going ok. Kendra stayed home from school because her back and side was hurting. Justin and Austin have been quite sick this last week. Maliyah and Courtney are doing really well. I am just so surprised and grateful that Maliyah never got sick. We really have been blessed this winter with good health for the most part. We have really good news about the book. The cover has been designed, but its not set in stone so we could change it. This is just so exciting I can't wait to finish.

Jake's brother, Bruce, and I are working hard on the book. The title we have come up with is "Conjoined at the Heart" The inspiring saga of the Herrin Twins. This has been such an amazing time in my life. I love being able to co-write this book with Bruce. It is going to be so great. Everyone is doing very well. Its Grandma Patsy's birthday today. Hope everyone else is doing great. I will update more tomorrow.

Just thought I would update after a long day at the hospital. We spent 7 hours there. We started the morning with getting Maliyah blood taken. She was very upset because they missed her vein and had to poke her again. She was very brave! Than we went to meet with the kidney docs. Maliyah is doing great she has gained 1 1/2 pounds, yeah!! I was so excited because she was losing alot of weight, so the tube is helping. The next appointment was with the ortho docs. They first started with x-rays, we learned that Kendra back is a 45 degree curve, which is very large. Maliyah doesn't have a curve she her ribs that are making her spinal cord look cricked. Courtney needed her wound to be look at after her surgery, so my Dad brought her up for the appointment, thanks Dad. We meet with just one general surgeon Dr. Meyers. It was great to see her again. She checked Courtney's wound and said it looked great. Than she went over the girls and asked us our "wish list" for the girls. It looks like they might be able to fix some of the things that will make the girls lifes easier. Justin and Austin spent the day with Grandma Pasty. Even with her leg broken(her brace will be off in a week) she loves to watch the boys and I think that she missed them alot.

We have moved the kids around a bit, Justin and Austin are no longer sharing a room. Justin really hates being by himself but Austin enjoys sleeping in his own room. We have been putting Allie in Justin's room with him to sleep. He loves it!! The last couple of time we went into let Allie out to go potty before we went to bed, Justin is down in Allie's bed sleeping with her. I wish that we could get a picture of them sleeping together but Allie always jumps up when she see us to go out. Courtney is going tomorrow to meet with the surgeon. Kendra and Maliyah are also going to meet with doctors tomorrow. Maliyah has her blood drawn tomorrow and kidney clinic. Kendra and Maliyah are meeting with the orthopedic doctors and general surgeons. The ortho doctors are seeing about there "robot legs". Kendra was very scared when I told her about this and thought that she was going to have surgery. Courtney told her that, silly Courtney. I told her that it wasn't true. They are also going to get x-rays with there backs for braces if they need them. The meeting with the general surgeons Dr. Meyers and Matlak(if he is around) will see how the girls are doing 1 1/2 years after the separation surgery. I will let you all know after the LLLLLLOOOOOOONNNNGGGG hard day at the hospital.

As you all could imagine we are busy. We had a pretty cool thing happen. About 2 weeks before Christmas we got a call from our Mayor. She said that we were nominated for family of the year. How cool is that! I would never have imagined all of these things happening after the surgery. Kendra and Maliyah have been major blessing, all of our kids have. I don't know how many of you all have a drama queen at your house but we have one. Ours is Maliyah Mae(as I call her). Her hair and clothes have to be just perfect. She is so funny. Last week I got her ready for school and I was running late and she wanted her hair in a headband. I just couldn't do it so she started crying and wouldn't go to school. She is so funny. She has to get ready for school pretty early because she has to have her outfit and hair just perfect. She is lucky that I LOVE to do hair! Courtney is feeling much better and will be able to return back to school tomorrow. I am just amazed how fast she bounced back. I wish that would of happened to me when I got my Kidney out. Maybe we adult are just babies and the kids are just alot stronger than us. Kendra is such an easy going girl. Sometime I forget about her J/K. Justin and Austin are doing great as well. The potty training isn't going well. Like I said before they are still little. Kendra is also doing well after her injections. I really think that its working, yeah Kendra!! Jake is doing great also. We had a big snow storm on Sunday and he was out snowblowing in his church clothes. Crazy Dad! Mom is working hard at home as always. There is a none stop loads of laundry to do, but I love my big family. I just really wish I could pay someone to do the laundry so I would have more time to scrapbook. I just recieved a new calling at church, Primary CTR 5(CTR stands for choose the right). I can't tell you how excited I am to teach the children. I love teaching!! Jake is in the nursery, its for children 18m-3 years old. He loves being in class with the boys. We are so healthy and happy right now I really hope that it stays that way. I had gotten some questions about the book so here some of the answers. I am co-writing it with Jake brother. His dream has always been to write a book. My dream has always been to stay up on our family history with scrapbooking and other things. So we are doing both. Also he just finished the outline and it brought tears to my eyes. I am so excited to share this with all of you that want to read it. I know that it is going to be great. One other story I need to share. We had a small New Years Eve party at our house. Jake's sister brought a friend to play games with us also. She had never met my children before. She called Jake's sister the next day and told her what a spiritual moment it was to meet Kendra and Mailyah. She said that she could just tell by looking in their eyes how special they were. She said that she felt close to the Lord when she was with them. I really hope that you all can see those things in the pictures that we post. There is something incredible about children with special need and just children. I also wanted to share one more thing and than I will stop typing. I have this cool new saying and it might help some of you "Do better, try harder". I know that I can always do better. Just thought I would share. Have a good day:)

I thought I would do a quick update. We spent a total of 10 long hours at the hospital today. It was pretty stressful. We got to the hospital at 6:00am and Courtney and Kendra checked into Sameday Sugery. Courtney was going first at 7:30am. When it was finally her turn, she cried bucket of tears. I cried along to, but didn't let her see me. She was holding on to me and crying when the doctor tried to take her from me(I would of done the samething at 8 years old). She was out in about 1 1/2 hours. She was so great when she wokeup, the nurse said that she didn't even cry. Yeah Courtney!!! Kendra was scheduled to go in at 11:30am(the hospital tried to change it but couldn't). It turned out to be more like 12:30pm. Kendra was crying from the moment we stepped back into the pre surgery waiting room after Courtney went home. I took a blanket and wrapped it around her and just held her and walked up and down the hall until it was her turn. I think that its great for kids to let us know in anyway what they are feeling and Kendra was doing that. Her sugery took about 1 1/2 hours also. She wokeup VERY VERY mad. I don't blame she a pit because the meds make you feel very weird. I really hope that Kendra's surgery works. Thanks girls for being great sports today. I am so proud of your bravery.

For some of you I have been reading your guestbook entries. Thank you for being supportive to Courtney. I will be reading her all of them when she gets home from school. I don't want her to be excited about the surgery because I want her to understand that it will hurt. I just don't want her to wake up and realize how much pain she is in and freak out. I want her to have all the attention that she can get from us. She is such a wonderful little girl and we love her so much. For Karen I am not sure if the infection scars the kidney only because of it being a transplanted kidney or if that always happens. Maybe someone else can answer that for you. I hope that you take care of yourself and keep your kidneys heathly. Keep me updated on your health. I know some of you were wondering about the D-flex that Kendra will recieve. She has reflex that goes up to her kidney. We don't want her to get kidney infections. It will be something that is very minor compared to the other things she has been through, but she still is going into the operating room and that is scary for her. We also are trying to potty train Justin and Austin. I know that they are still young, so we aren't going to push them. I hope that Jake can update the picture soon, but he is so busy with work. We love you Jake, thanks for working for us:) Thanks for still reading our updates. For some of you that think we keep updating to sell you the book. I can assure you that isn't it. We have come to love the people that read are web site and its a wonderful journal that we can keep for our kids. You guys are wonderful. Thanks
